How many planets do we need, if everybody lives like you?

Earth Overshoot Day

Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what Earth can regenerate in that year.

So, basically, it is the day of the year, we -the human race- start to consume more resources than we have. The year 2021 recorded a +6.6% y/y in Carbon Footprint while only +0.3% in biocapacity was achieved. Thus Earth Overshoot Day 2021 will happen earlier this year in just a few weeks, on July the 29th (it was August, 22 last year)

Now, the EOD is calculated on a global scale with the formula:

(Earth’s Biocapacity / Humanity’s Ecological Footprint) x 365 = Earth Overshoot Day

The interesting thing is that we, as individuals, can calculate our own overshoot day, comparing our personal footprint, as generated by our behaviors, with the pro-capita share of biocapacity available. It means that we, as individuals, can make a difference. Use the footprint calculator to assess your own personal impact.
